ZHI XIN'S NOTES FOR 3RD JAN 2010
Verses Reference of the message : Joel 1:1-14
- (Verse 4) Plague of locust was God's warning to Judah.
~Locust plague is common in the Old Testament! Eg. Exodus 10:12. #(Verse 4) Joel uses different names to describe the different forms of locust: "palmerworm", "cankerworm" and "caterpiller" because it is common there. It's the same as since we don't have snow in Singapore, we just call it snow. But in other places where snow is more common, they have many other names. Eg. Hail.
- (Verse 3) Joel tells the children of Israel to pass down the story of the locust plague from generation to generation
- (Verse 3) Joel addresses the drunkards first.
-Maybe because they are referring to the people who use pleasure to cover their sorrows. -"Awake" is used, calling the drunkards to snap out of their drunken stupor. It is also God's call for us to repent and to stop dwelling in pleasure.
- (Verse 11 & 12) The farmers here wanted more than just wheat, this can be seen from their action of planting apple trees, fir and many other things. More isn't wrong but more at the expense of God is wrong.
- People live for pleasure (drunkards), people live for work (farmers), people live for religious activities (priests). Do they live for God Himself?
- (Isaiah 45:6-7) "I make peace, and create evil."
Evil is not referring to sin, instead it's referring to natural disasters and illnesses etc. God's telling us that He controls all the good times and the bad times. We just have to delight in God's good times even though He may present us with bad times. Remember, He promised us a way out of every single temptation and difficulty. Every trial He has given to us is never with a dead end.
SUMMARY:
- Whatever you do, whatever you face, turn to Him with all your heart and soul.
- Live for God Himself and not for the religious activities.
- God must be central in your life, everything else should just rotate around Him in their orbits.
